The Gardena Kendo Club was established in 1952 and was registered as a non-profit organization in California in 1964. Kendo, “the way of the sword,” is the art of Japanese fencing. Kendo is not strictly regarded as a Japanese martial art anymore. Today, Kendo has developed into an international sport that teaches not only skillful use of the sword, but mental and physical self-control and self-development. Kendo also emphasizes honesty, integrity, and patience. As a non-profit organization, its sole purpose is to pass down the history, philosophy, and skills of Kendo to future generations. Their instructors are all volunteers whose reward and gratification is attained by assisting each student to grow in their proficiency of Kendo as they grasp a deeper understanding of the art.
Kyudo has been around for over 1000 years and has evolved from a survival technique to a method of warfare, to a martial art. Although it has a long history and over 100,000 practitioners in Japan, it is relatively new here in the United States. Kyudo is now used as a way to enhance not only physical mastery, but also mental acuity with lessons that can be used in everyday life. We invite you to join us on that journey.
We are the only All Nippon Kyudo Federation-approved kyudo organization in Southern California. Our mission is to cultivate the understanding of the art of Japanese Archery.
