こんにちは。私の名前は福田海里です。私は16歳で、JCIに7年間通いました。私はいつも日本の家族と言葉の壁があったので、彼らとコミュニケーションを取るために、そして日本の文化に触れるためにこの学校に来ました。初めてこの学校に来たとき､何が起こるのか分からなくて、とても緊張して、恥ずかしかったことを今でも覚えています。しかし、その緊張はすぐになくなって、すぐにこのコミュニティーにとても温かく迎えられていると感じました。ハロウィンの仮装や運動会、ひなまつり、節分、こどもの日などの日本の祝日を祝ったことなど、この学校で行ったすべてのイベントが本当に楽しかったです。この学校に入学した日からずっと一緒にいる素敵な友達や、私にたくさんのことを教えてくれた素晴らしい先生方にも、本当に感謝しています。みんなのおかげで、ここでの経験は思い出深く、楽しいものになりました。JCIで1番すごいと思うことは、みんなが一緒になって日本の文化を分かち合っていることです。この学校で学んだことで、今まで教わらなかった自分の文化についてもたくさん知ることができました。ここにいると、日本に対する尊敬やつながりを本当に感じることができます。これからJCIに通う人や、今通っている人にアドバイスをするなら、「一生懸命頑張って、自分のベストを尽くしてほしい」ということです。日本語学校の外でも日本語を使う時間を見つけて、日常生活の中でも実践してみてください。わからないことがあっても落ち込まないで、いつでも質問してください。私のように、宿題をギリギリまで後回しにしたり、アラームを遅く設定して遅刻したりしないようにしてくださいね。この学校は、日本語を学ぶだけでなく、素晴らしい人々と出会える場所でもあります。毎週土曜日に会っていた人たちに会えなくなるのはとても寂しいですが、みんなに素敵な未来が待っていると思うと、心が温かくなります。JCIの皆さん、すべてに本当にありがとうございました。先生方、友達、そして学校に感謝しています。みなさんに、たくさんの幸せがありますように。
Hello, my name is Kairi Fukuda. I am 16 years old and I have been attending JCI for 7 years. I always had a language barrier with my family in Japan, so I came to this school so I could communicate with them and also be in touch with my Japanese culture. I still remember my first time attending this school, and being super nervous and shy because I didn’t know what to expect. But that nervousness quickly went away and I soon felt very welcomed by the community. I really enjoyed all the events we did at this school, like dressing up for Halloween and celebrating Japanese holidays such as Undokai, Hina matsuri, Setsu bun, and Kodomo no hi. I am also really grateful for my friends who I have known since the day I joined this school and are really amazing people, and my wonderful teachers who helped and taught me everything I know. I thank and appreciate them all so much, and they are the people who made my experience here memorable and fun. The most impressive thing about JCI is how everyone comes together to share the Japanese culture. There are many things I’ve learned over the years about my own culture that I hadn’t been taught before and when at this school you really feel a sense of belonging and respect for Japan. Advice I’d give to the people who still attend here or want to attend is to work hard and try your best. Find time outside of Japanese school to practice Japanese, and even implement it in your daily life and don’t be discouraged if you don’t understand something. Always ask questions and don’t be like me where you procrastinate on homework till the last minute or set your alarm too late and end up being late for school. This school really helps you with learning Japanese and also meeting amazing people along the way. I will forever miss this school and the people who I got to see every Saturday, but I am happy knowing great things will come for all of them. Overall, thank you JCI for everything. Thank you to my teachers, my friends, and the school. I wish you all the best.

おはようございます。僕の名前はローガン・ガルシアです。僕は16歳です。僕はJCIに通い始めて７年になります。その頃、僕は剣道を始めていて、元校長のラリー先生がJCIを紹介してくれました。この７年間で、正しい日本語の読み方、書き方、話し方について学んできました。ここで過ごした中で、素晴らしい友達ができ、沢山の学習経験を共有し、特にクラス発表会では、楽しい思い出を作ることができました。いつも、毎回の授業が楽しみで、学ぶことだけでなく、友達に会えるのも楽しみでした。JCIの魅力は、一つだけではなく、JCIで得られたコミュニティーや経験は、決して忘れられないものとなるでしょう。コロナ禍でさえも、JCIは継続して授業をしてくれました。スポーツデー、こどもの日、女の子の日などの祝日には、それぞれの伝統の背後にある意味と歴史を教えてくれるクラス活動がありました。これらの祝日がどのように祝われるかを体験する機会を与えられ、いつも、食べたり家に持ち帰ったりするちょっとしたお土産がありました。ここで得た知識はとても役立ちました。実際に日本に行ったときには、学んだことを活かして会話をすることができました。現地で文字を読んだり、話したり出来ると気が付いた瞬間に達成感を感じました。もし、日本語の勉強を始める人や、続けている人にアドバイスをするとしたら、たとえ小さなことでも、毎日の生活に、少し日本語を取り入れてみてください。小さな積み重ねが大きな力になります。また、授業に出席する前にクラスの内容や宿題を復習し、試験が始まる時期には試験のために勉強してください。JCIを去ることについては、嬉しさと同時に寂しさも感じています。ここでのたくさんの思い出は、忘れられません。初級でひらがなを学び始めてから、会話ができ、漢字も読めるまでになった自分の成長を振り返ると、感謝の気持ちで一杯になります。僕の学びの旅を支えてくれたすべてのスタッフの皆さんに感謝したいと思います。そしてこの機会を与えてくれた母と父にも感謝したいと思います。ありがとうございました。
Good morning. My name is Logan Garcia, and I’m 16 years old. I have been attending JCI for 7 years now. At the time, I was getting into kendo, and Larry had introduced me to JCI. Over these past 7 years, I have been educated in how to read, write, and speak proper Japanese. During my time here, I’ve made great friends and shared many learning experiences with them, creating fun memories — especially during class performances. I always looked forward to each lesson, not just to learn, but also to see my friends. There isn’t just one thing to love about JCI, the community and the experiences that JCI has given me will be one that I’ll never forget. Even during COVID, JCI remained open and still taught lessons. On holidays like Sports Day, Children’s Day, Girls’ Day, and many others, we would have class activities that taught us the meaning and history behind each tradition. We were given the chance to experience how these holidays are celebrated and always got a little souvenir to eat or take home. The knowledge I’ve gained here has been practical, too. I was able to use what I learned to communicate when I visited Japan. I felt accomplished the moment to realize that I could read and speak while I was there. If I could give any advice to those starting or continuing their Japanese studies, it would be this: try to apply a little Japanese to your everyday life, even if it’s something small. Every little bit of practice helps. Also review class work or homework before arriving at class and when exams begin, study for them. I feel both happy and sad at the same time about leaving JCI. There’re so many memories I’ve made here that I won’t forget, looking back at where I started and seeing how much I’ve grown from a beginner, learning hiragana, to advanced, making conversation and reading kanji, I feel incredibly grateful. I want to say thank you to all the staff for supporting me on my educational journey. I also want to thank my Mom and Dad for giving me this opportunity. Thank you.

私 の名前 はマーレニーです。 私はJCIに7年いました。JCIで日本の文化や言語についてたくさん学べたことを嬉しく思います。JCIは、お餅つきや朝の体操、そして運動会と新年の発表をしたとても思い出深い場所です。このような楽しい活動をすることが一番楽しかったです。運動会では、友達や家族が応援に来てくれて、一緒に盛り上がりました。新年の発表では、大勢の人の前で演技をしましたしが、ほかの人の演技を見るのも楽しみでした。そして、みんなの発表が終わった後の友達と一緒に過ごした時間は、特に楽しく、出身や宗教、地域を問わず、たくさんの人を結びつける有意義な場所でした。違う町の人でも新しいつながりを作ることができました。JCIのおかげで多くのことを学ぶことができて、深く感謝しています。ここの人々は本当に素晴らしく、一緒に何かをすることで本当のつながりを感じました。JCIにいると、私はとても安全で安心できると感じます。それは、ここにいる皆さんが親切で、思いやりがあって、温かく迎えてくれるからです。これからJCIに来る人たちにアドバイスをするとしたら、「もし、ここに来た理由が『学んで、帰るだけ』だと思っているなら、考え直してみてください。」と言いたいです。学ぶことには、新しい友達を作ったり、人とつながったりすることも含まれます。ほかの人の歴史や文化など、ほかの人について知らなかったことを学ぶこともできます。そして、JCIではたくさんの楽しい思い出を作ることができます。ですから、この経験を大切にし、”時は誰も待ってくれない”ことを忘れないでください。ここでの時間は思っているよりはるかに早く過ぎますよ。私は心からJCIを恋しく思うでしょう。また、このコミュニティーの人々を深く恋しく思うと思います。しかし、、これは単なるコミュニティーではなく「家族」と呼んだほうがいいのかもしれません。ここにいる人々がお互いに気遣っているのを見ると、本当に本当の家族のように感じます。ですから、JCIは家であり安全な場所であるということを、常に覚えておいてください。ここでは自分の考えを共有し、有意義な約束を変わすことができます。そしてこれが私から皆さんへの約束です。「私はJCIとこのコミュニティーの人々を大切にし、愛し、支え続けます。いつも心の中で安全で安らぐ場所としてJCIを思い続けます。」
My name is Marleny. I have been with JCI for seven years. I’m grateful to have learned so much about Japanese culture and language through JCI.JCI has been a place full of wonderful memories—like making mochi, doing morning exercises, participating in sports festivals, and giving New Year presentations. What I enjoyed the most at JCI were the fun activities such as the sports festivals and New Year presentations. During the sports festival, my friends and family came to cheer us on, and we all had a great time together. In the New Year presentations, I performed in front of a large audience, and I also looked forward to seeing other people’s performances. After all the presentations were finished, the time I spent with my friends was especially fun and meaningful and was a place that brought people together regardless of their background, religion, or region. Even people from different towns could form new connections. Thanks to JCI, I was able to learn so many things, and I’m deeply thankful for that. The people here are truly wonderful, and through doing things together, I felt a real sense of connection. When I’m at JCI, I feel very safe and at ease—because everyone here is kind, thoughtful, and welcoming. If I were to give advice to people who are coming to JCI in the future, I would say this: “If you think the only reason to come here is just to study and then go back home, please reconsider. Learning also includes making new friends and building relationships. You can also learn things you didn’t know about others-like their history and culture. And you can make many joyful memories here at JCI. So treasure this experience and remember: time doesn’t wait for anyone. Your time here will pass by much faster than you think. I will truly miss JCI from the bottom of my heart. I think I’ll also deeply miss the people in this community. But maybe this isn’t just a community—perhaps it’s better to call it “family.” When I see how the people here care for each other, it really feels like a true family. So, please always remember: JCI is a home. It’s a safe place. Here, you can share your thoughts and exchange meaningful promises. And here is my promise to all of you: I will continue to cherish, love, and support the people who make JCI and this community what it is. I will always think of JCI as a safe and comforting place in my heart.

こんにちは。僕の名前はキャメロン・ガーです。僕は17歳で、過去７年間JCIに通いました。JCIでは、運動会や日本の祝日を通して、日本語から文化に至るまで、あらゆることを学びました。運動会のクラス同士の競争や、日本の昔話を演じる発表会は決して忘れられません。JCIは僕を人間的にも成長させてくれ、日本語の知識のすべてを教えてくれました。僕は日本に2回訪れた時、ここで学んだことを実際に使うことができ、言葉の理解がまだ浅い中でも現地の人々と会話することができました。この学校が僕を温かく迎えてくれたこと、そしてJCIのおかげで出会えた友達に感謝しています。JCIは間違いなく僕の人生を良い方向へ変えてくれました。言語だけでなく、規律や学ぶことの楽しさ、何かに長く取り組むことの素晴らしさを教えてくれました。これからJCIで日本語を学び始めたばかりの人へのアドバイスは、先生から出された宿題だけに頼らず、それ以上のことに挑戦することです。僕が父としたように、めちゃくちゃな日本語で会話を試したり、毎日少しずつ練習したりすることでも構いません。継続することが、言語とその中に散りばめられた細かい文法を覚える一番の方法です。来年は、中間試験の朝に早起きして勉強したり、ひな祭り（女の子の日）、こどもの日（男の子の日）などの行事を学んだり、夏には剣道部と一緒に焼きそばを作ったりしたことが、きっと恋しくなるでしょう。最後に、僕がこの学校に通っている間ずった温かい環境で迎えてくれたJCIと、その関係者の皆様に感謝したいと思います。
Hello, my name is Cameron Gurr, I am 17 years old and I have been attending JCI for the past 7 years. JCI has taught me everything from the Japanese language to its culture throughout sports days and Japanese holidays. I’ll never forget the competition between classes on sports days and the performances about classic Japanese stories. JCI has helped me grow as a person and taught me everything I know about the Japanese language. I have been able to use what I learned here practically during my two visits to Japan, where I was able to understand and talk with the locals despite my small understanding of the language. I am thankful for the community this school has welcomed me into, and the friends I was able to meet due to JCI. JCI has undoubtedly changed my life for the better, teaching me not just the language, but discipline, the joy of learning, and how rewarding it can be to dedicate yourself to something for so long. My advice for those just starting out in learning Japanese at JCI would be to go beyond just what the homework provided by your teachers is, be it attempting botched conversations only in incomprehensible Japanese like I did with my dad, or just trying to practice a little every day, consistency is the best way to ensure that you remember the language and all the small grammar intricacies that are everywhere throughout the language. Next year, I will surely miss the early mornings spent cramming before midterms, learning about holidays like Girls’ Day (the Hina matsuri) and Boys’ Day (children’s day), and in the summertime, working the yakisoba stand with the Kendo team. Overall, I want to thank JCI and its personnel for the welcoming environment they have shown me for the entirety of my time at the school.

こんにちは。僕の名前はステパン・ティシュチュクです。13歳です。JCIで素晴らしい7年間を過ごしました。僕は入門クラスから始めて、すべてのクラスを経験してきました。その間に、たくさんの素晴らしいクラスメートや先生方と出会いました。コロナ禍の時には、学ぶことがとても難しくなりました。それでもJCIは、Zoom(ズーム)のオンライン授業で、日本語が上達する機会を与え続けてくれました。残念ながら、それによって休み時間のホールにあった素敵なおやつスタンドのようなものがなくなってしまいましたが。JCIでとても楽しく、印象に残っていることの一つは、書道や寿司作りなどの特別なイベントです。これらのイベントでは、日本の文化について学ぶことができます。JCIで一番よく覚えていることの一つは、先生方がとても親切で、生徒一人一人を大切に思ってくださることです。たとえば、携帯電話を失くしたようなときでも、先生たちは必ず助けてくれて、全力を尽くしてくれます。そして、先生方の「教えること」への情熱は本当に素晴らしく、みんなが授業の内容をきちんと理解できるように一生懸命教えてくれます。僕にとって、学校の一日は長くて、終わりに近づくと少し疲れてしまいますが、いつも元気いっぱいの先生方を見ると、本当に驚かされます。JCIでの一番よいところは、通うことで得られる「経験」と、先生方やスタッフの皆さんが僕たちを学校の一員として迎えてくれることです。もしアドバイスをするなら、「宿題をしっかりやること」が大切だと言いたいです。遅れを取らないようにしましょう。そして、先生たちの話をよく聞くことも大切です。聞き逃すと、宿題の内容がわからなくなってしまうこともあります。最後に、JCIの先生方やスタッフの皆さんに、素晴らしい学びの環境を作りながら支えてくださったことに感謝したいと思います。
Hello. My name is Stepan Tyshchuk. I am 13 years old and have been attending JCI for 7 wonderful years. I started in Nyumon class and have been through all the classes and met many great classmates, teachers, and people during my time here. Some of my classes were during covid time, which made learning much more difficult. Nevertheless, JCI gave us the opportunity to keep pursuing higher fluency in Japanese through online classes, using applications like Zoom. Sadly, this took away some things like the amazing snack stands that used to be in the halls at lunchtime. One of the most fun and enjoyable parts of Japanese Cultural Institute school is the special events, such as the calligraphy or the sushi making as they teach you some of the Japanese culture. One of the things that I remember best about Japanese cultural institute school is just how kind the teachers are, and how much they care about you and your learning. If anyone is struggling with something like losing their phone, the teachers always help and give them all. However, the dedication the teachers have to make sure you are learning is incredible, as they work extremely hard trying to make sure everybody understands what we are doing or going to do. To me, how the teachers always have so much energy always surprises me, as the school day is long and even I get a little tired near the end. The best part of JCI school is the experience that you have by attending the school, and how the teachers and staff make you feel as if you are part of the school community. If I had to give advice, it would be to do your homework, as you don’t want to fall behind. It is also important to listen very carefully to your teachers and instructors, as if you miss something that they said, you might not understand the homework. I would also like to thank all the JCI teachers and staff for their hard work and being so supportive while creating such a wonderful learning environment.
