Ryukyukoku matsuri daiko los angeles

RMDLA Since 1995. Watch the short spectacular video below! Note: Picture starts @ :15 mark

About us
Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko (RMD) translates to “Ryukyu Kingdom Festival Drums”. Ryukyu Kingdom is the ancient name for what is presently known as the Okinawa prefecture of Japan.

RMD is modeled on the traditional Okinawan obon festival drum dancing called “eisa”. The performers dance and drum simultaneously to an exciting blend of traditional and contemporary Okinawan and Japanese music.

The group performs with several types of drums: the odaiko (big drum), which is suspended in front of the body by long pieces of purple cloth over the shoulder and back, the shime-daiko (hand-held, flat, two-sided drum), and the paranku (hand-held, flat, one-sided drum).

As of August 2024, RMD has 50 branches in Japan, 28 branches in eight other countries: Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Czech Republic, Taiwan, and the United States. There are approximately 2,500 RMD members in total.
Practices: We practice every Sunday from 9am-1pm at the Nisei Veterans Memorial Hall
Price: $15 a month
