Kazuko Ballet 35th Anniversary Student Dance Recital

The audience will be much delighted to see KAZUKO’s original dance pieces and beautiful demonstration of technique, performed by talented young students. The public is invited, free of admission. Kusaki-zome, Japanese Textile Dye Workshop

Kusaki-zome are fabrics dyed with plant juices extracted from flowers, leaves, stems and roots, giving it a soft, subtle color contrast.  The dyeing method of kusaki-zome was practiced in Japan until around 1925.  It can now be thought of as an organic, eco-friendly alternative to chemical dye.  Setsuko Hayashi will lead students through this ancient dyeing technique using three different dyes made from onion skins, pomegranates, and loquat leaves creating artistically dyed scarves.  To register for the workshop or for further information, please contact the JCI at info@jci-gardena.org or call (310) 324-6611.



TANOSHII Fun Camp

Tanuki_Tanoshii-T-Frnt_No-l.gif2012 will be the fifth year for the TANOSHII Fun Camp sponsored by the South Bay JACL and the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute (GVJCI). The mission of the TANOSHII Fun Camp is to "Promote the Legacy of the Japanese American Culture and Heritage to our Youth". Registration will be held at the JCI Hall on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. until the 50 camper enrollment is met. Camp Registration Forms will be available on our website from February 29, 2012 at www.tanoshiifuncamp.org



Summer Improv/Communication Workshop

Step into the world of improv comedy and gain some valuable life-skills (public speaking, self-identity,  teamwork, etc.).  Working with the nation’s premier Asian American themed improv and sketch comedy group, COLD TOFU (www.coldtofu.com), the workshop will be an introduction to improv over 3 weeks with a showcase on the 4th week. Building a Replica WWII Camp in Minecraft

Middle and high school students are invited to attend a summer workshop where they will use the videogame Minecraft to build a replica of Manzanar, one of ten U.S. concentration camps in which Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II. In the workshop, students will work together to build their camp replicas and then display their finished work at a final culmination session. The workshop is a fun way for students to learn about Japanese American history while also developing collaboration and creativity skills. There is only room for 12 participants, so early registration is recommended. The Arising From Injustice alternate reality game is a free-to-play, social learning experience. In the game, teams of layers solve puzzles and complete missions together in order to reveal new scenes of an engaging storyline.  Arising From Injustice is focused around the Japanese American incarceration experience during World War II.  The game delivers a fun and engaging way to not only learn about history but also develop language arts and 21st  century learning skills, such as collaboration and creativity.  In addition, the game is also a social learning experience in which players learn from and connect with their teammates and other players.  The game will take place primarily online (asynchronously - i.e., play according to your schedule) over approximately a six-week period  starting in late June 2012.  Age range: high school to adult.  Please email gamemaster@shoyu.com to sign up for the game or to get more information.



Write From The Heart

Three free creative writing workshops for high school to college age youth.  Do you wish you could express yourself better through your writing?  Do you have to write a personal essay for an application and feel stuck?  Do you have an interest in writing for performance, storytelling or spoken word expression?  Come participate in this special pilot program with a series of 3 workshops that will open up your creativity and provide you with tools to take home with you for your writing process. You'll play theatre games and go through simple writing exercises in a fun, safe, interactive and community-focused setting.  traci kato-kiriyama is a third-generation Nikkei performing artist, arts educator, community-builder and author of a book of poetry, signaling.  Supported in part with funding from the Japanese American Community Services.
